The crew hadn’t left the command center. The pack had finished their feeding frenzy a couple of hours ago. They’d picked her clean, leaving nothing but bones. Chang was unfortunately alive for most of it. This led Sanjay to hypothesize that they must have possessed some sort of healing factor but without an actual study, it was just a hypothesis.

The pack remained even after they’d finished with Chang. Harvey knew that you didn’t have to be an animal expert to know what they were doing. Whether they were looking for weak spots or just waiting for something else to happen, the pack had chosen their next meal. Harvey and the rest of the crew knew it was only a matter of time until they had to come face to face with their fate.

The crew had spent the last couple of hours getting an assessment of Armstrong’s life-support system. After checking that and getting a count of resources, the prognosis wasn’t good. Life support had been heavily damaged during the emergency jettison of Dr. Chang and the east wing. Harvey did what he could, but the most crucial parts of the system weren’t salvageable. By his estimates, they would run out of air in the next three months—so long as there wasn’t another solar storm or meteor shower. The other issue they faced was food. The cafeteria and most of the crew’s food had been in the eastern wing. After Sanjay and Jessica took count, they estimated that the base now had enough food to sparingly feed four people for the next two weeks. Whether they faced the pack or starvation, the crew’s outlook wasn’t good.

After getting all the information, Commander Sanders contacted Vince Notley and Lt Col. Hannon for a conference call. As always, Vince didn’t mince words

“For Christ’s sake, Samantha, I have been trying to reach you for the last few hours. What the fuck is going on up there?”

If the commander was fazed, she didn’t show it. She was all business at this point.

“Gentlemen, last we spoke, the crew was confronting a hostile member of Aldrin Base. It is my duty and my regret to inform you that Captain Michael Murdock was killed by that crew member. We have good reason to believe it was Dr. Popov.”

“Hold on, just wait a minute, you’re telling me that Mike was—”

“That isn’t all,” Sanders interrupted. “Believe me, gentlemen, that is the least-ridiculous thing I have to report. Astronauts Howlett and Peoples were able to return to Armstrong Base while Captain Murdock attempted to stall Dr. Popov. It needs to be noted that he died valiantly and in service to his crew and the mission.”

That last sentence led to Commander Sanders shedding a tear. It was clear that she was doing her best to hold it together.

“What I have to tell you next is going to seem impossible in every sense of the word, which is why I asked Astronaut Howlett to send you the video files that have been collected over the last few hours.
